Obituary of Dorothy Alice Hemingway

Age 89, of Vassar went peacefully to be with the Lord Monday, October 27, 2014, at the home of her daughter Pat in Frankenmuth. The funeral service will take place 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 30, 2014, at the First Baptist Church of Vassar with Pastor David Somers officiating. Family will receive friends at Martin Funeral Home in Vassar Wednesday from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm and will be taken to the church to lie in state Thursday, October 30 from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice Advantage of Bay City or Donor's Choice of Charity. Envelopes are available at the funeral home and church. Dorothy was born May 21, 1925, in Vassar, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy and Maude (Ellithorpe) German. She attended Vassar High School and graduated with the class of 1943. Dorothy served her church faithfully as a Sunday school teacher. She met the love of her life, Max Hemingway, on Valentine's Day and married him on August 1, 1959, at Vassar. Sadly he preceded her in death on January 29, 1999. After working as a teller for 35 years and 7 months, Dorothy retired from NBD Bank formerly 1st State Bank of Vassar in 1990. Dorothy was happiest outdoors doing yard work and trimming trees, she had a passion for photography filling over 75 albums with her pictures and in earlier years she enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Dorothy enjoyed camping and fishing and holidays at home with her family. She had a love for animals especially her pets. She could also be seen eating her favorite snack, Oreo cookies. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Patricia Hall, Kathleen (George) McPhee, Sandra (Ken) Stuart, Thomas (Emilee) Best, Michael (Cathy) Hemingway, Peggy (Rob) Bulko and Robert (Bonnie) Hemingway; 27 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Gertrude Tkatch, Mildred Maxwell, special friends, Carolyn Rapson and Pat Wheeler and many nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to give a special thank you to Hospice Advantage of Bay City, especially Marina. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Max, sisters, Phyllis, Anna and Barbara, and brothers, Don, Al, Carl and Ray.
