Obituary of Evelyn "Lucille" Esther (Hayward) Kemp

Age 97 of Flint died Sunday August 9, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family. The funeral service will take place 11:00 am at Martin Funeral, Cremation and Tribute Services-Genesee Township on Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Pastor Karen Williams will officiate; with burial at Flint Memorial Park to follow. Evelyn’s family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm and Wednesday from 10:00 am until time of service at 11:00 am. Memorial contributions may be made to Genesee United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or Johnson Memorial Library (Genesee), envelopes are available at the funeral home. Evelyn was born November 27, 1917 in Flint to John & Esther (Wynne) Hayward, the oldest of 8 children. Evelyn “Lucy” married Winston (Bill) A. Kemp on May 22, 1937 in Wigville (Grand Blanc), Michigan. Partners in life for 58 years until his death on February 14, 1995. Evelyn “Lucy” was a supportive wife of Winston’s (Bill’s) master woodworking business, homemaker, proud mother and grandmother of her growing family. Winston and Evelyn met at and were both graduates of Grand Blanc High School. Evelyn worked at the Blossom Shop for 13 years. She was a member of the Genesee United Methodist Church since 1946, serving as Sunday school and vacation bible school teacher for many years, sang in the choir, active member of the United Methodist Women for over 30 years, served as the Financial Secretary for 26 years and known as the Harvest Supper “potato lady”. Evelyn was a member of the Fairwinds Girl Scouts as a young teen and later served as an adult leader for 20 years, for her daughters and granddaughters. Evelyn “Lucy” enjoyed being outdoors, seeing the country with her husband, children and grandchildren, camping, gardening, canning, sewing & knitting items for family and was an avid reader. Music was a joy throughout her life, playing piano as a child and organ later in life. She taught generations of her family to be involved, strong spirited, self-sufficient and enjoy life no matter what comes your way. She was never too old to be forever young in spirit. Dearly loved and appreciated by family and friends that wish her another wonderful & exciting journey with God. Evelyn is survived by her three children Winston (Kathryn) Kemp, Gayle (Lawrence) Green, and Colleen Hackney (Keith Flewelling), 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 7 great great-grandchildren. She cherished the time spent with each of them, taking pleasure in their growth and adventure for life. Preceded in death by her parents John & Esther Hayward, husband Winston (Bill) Kemp, son Addison Kemp, daughter-in-law Virginia Kemp, brothers Lawrence and Clifford Hayward, sisters Irene Dutcher, Marian Price and Edith Laichalk and granddaughter Anna Kemp.
