Alan Hugh Houtaling

Age 76, of Flushing, died January 23, 2026. A funeral service will take place 1:00 pm, Monday, March 16, 2026, at Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services in Mt. Morris. Alan’s family will be present at the funeral home to receive friends on Sunday, March 15, 2026 from 12:30 pm until 6:00 pm; and on Monday from 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm. Alan was born in Flint, on September 30, 1949, he is the son of Walter Simpson and Catherine (Drummond) Houtaling. Educated locally, Alan graduated from Carmen Ainsworth High School with the class of 1967. Shortly after graduating high school, Alan heeded the call of duty, enlisting in the United States Coast Guard until receiving his honorable discharge. Upon returning to civilian life, Alan would begin working as a coach for the Genesee Intermediate School District. During his 31 years as a coach, Alan would lead the school to numerous state championships. In his free time, Alan enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing ping-pong in Flushing and Davison. He was known to lend a hand to those that needed it and volunteered his time at the Soup Kitchen. Alan was a collector of Detroit Tiger’s memorabilia, and had many autographed baseballs, and cards in his collection. He was also Native American artifacts expert and had a collection of artifacts as well as artifacts related to Flint.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Shane Scott; two grandchildren: Jakob Scott, and Alyssa Catherine Scott; cousin, Judith O’Brien; and many other family members and friends.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents.
