Gary Dean Gilmer was born on July 25, 1939, in Flint, Michigan, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Violetta (Ochtel) Gilmer. Gary attended Mt. Morris High School where he met his wife Janet of 66 years. He then went on to enjoy a 38 year career as a Tool and Die Maker at General Motors Chevrolet Manufacturing and Plant 38 where he was active in the union as an apprentice representative and other roles before retiring in 1997. He was active in his community, having served multiple years on the school Board for Clio Schools, the Clio zoning and planning commision, Clio Little League, and was a longtime donor for Red Cross. He and Janet moved to Peach Lake in West Branch, Michigan before returning to Clio in 2020.

Gary was an avid golfer, notably having multiple "Hole-in-ones," as well as being an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, once holding the record for the 2nd largest Elk taken in Michigan. In addition to his many accomplishments, what Gary loved most was spending his time with his friends and family.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife: Janet Gilmer; his two sons: Greg Gilmer of Mt. Morris and his daughter Sarah Gilmer (Riley) of Flint, Scott Gilmer (Caroline) of St. Louis, Missouri and their children; Evan Otero Gilmer (Haily) of San Francisco, Bryan Otero Gilmer of New York City, Kathryn Otero Gilmer of Chicago, and Julianne Otero Gilmer of St. Louis.
