Melvin "Mel" Ward

Age 69 of Mikado, formerly of Flint, died May 25, 2025, with his family by his side. A funeral service will take place 3:00 pm, Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services in Mt. Morris with cremation to follow. Pastor Bill Christensen officiating. Mel’s family will be present at the funeral home to receive friends on Thursday morning from 1:00 pm until the time of the service at 3:00 pm. In honor of Mel's love for the sports the family has asked visitors to wear their favorite Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers shirt. Mel was born July 7, 1955, in Alpena; he is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Melvin and Gertrude (Fowler) Ward. Educated locally, Mel attended Flint Southwestern High School. He worked as an Intake Coordinator for New Paths Inc. in Flint for 20 years, retiring in 2008. He was a long-time member of West Flint Church of God, and Solid Rock. In his free time, Mel loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, softball and watching the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers play. Mel was well known for being able to play any song on the piano, accordion and guitar by ear.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Lindsey Ward and boyfriend, Jerry Burns, Michelle and husband, Ryan J. Smith, Matthew Ward and girlfriend, Corey Gage; grandchildren: Ethan, Caleb, Morgan, Paige, Megan, Dylan, Katelynn, and Jonathan; two sisters: Patti and husband, Craig Beins, and Brenda and husband, Dave Hammon; former wife and friend, Deb Ward; lifelong-friend, Don Alexander; and many other family members and friends.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Cindy.
