Raymond Arthur “Art” Miles, 90, of Clio, died on April 30, 2025. He was born May 2, 1934, in Somerville, NJ to William Joseph and Marie Harriet (Olchanowska) Miesowitz. He grew up in the Somerville area. In 1953, Art enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Stationed at Norman, OK, he studied weather casting. As a specialist in meteorology and oceanography, he spent two years aboard the U.S.S. Northampton as part of the NATO fleet. He was discharged in 1957 and on June 15, 1957, he married Carol “Chip” Peterson in Watchung, NJ. Art and Chip settled in Boulder, CO, where he earned a degree in business administration from the University of Colorado. In 1962 they moved to Clio in the Flint, MI area, where he was employed by General Motors at Buick for 28 years. He retired in 1990 as a project engineer.
Art was very active in community affairs as a member of the Clio Jaycees, Clio Planning Commission, City Commission, the Library Board, the Parent Teacher Association for the Clio Early Elementary School, and the Clio Amphitheater Board. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for several years. He appeared in multiple productions for the Cast and Crew of Clio. With his 1930 Essex, he was active in old car clubs–he loved going on tours and driving in parades with them. After his retirement from Buick he became Director of Clio Parks and Recreation Department and supervised installation of the Clio skatepark and two playscapes. Art always enjoyed visiting with friends, often regaling them with tales of his travels and adventures in the navy.
Art was predeceased by his parents, his brother William R. Miesowitz, and his sister Natalie M. Melick. Left to remember him are his wife, son James A. Miles (Patty), and daughter Linda S. Miles (David Motson). He also leaves behind six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
There will be only a small ceremony for close family members. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations in Art’s name to the Humane Society of Genesee County or the charity of your choice.
Art's obituary was lovingly written by his family.
