Age 73, of Flint, passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at Hurley Medical Center. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Rick’s life will be held from 2:00pm until 6:00pm on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles 3589, 3270 North State Road, Davison, Michigan. In honor of Rick and his love for hockey, the family invites all who attend to wear their favorite hockey attire. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be considered to the American Lung Association. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family on Richard’s tribute wall at martinfuneralhome.com.
Richard Lee Rau was born on September 15, 1952, in Flint, Michigan, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Norman and Vivian (Town) Rau. Educated locally, Richard graduated from Flint Northwestern High School in 1970. He worked as a self-employed contractor for over 30 years before his well-earned retirement. Richard was blessed with two beautiful children, to whom he would cherish deeply. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 3589 for many years, where he enjoyed spending time with his husband and friends. One of Richard’s favorite activities was watching hockey. Not only did he enjoy watching the Detroit Red Wings and Grand Rapids Griffins, he would never miss attending a Flint Firebirds game. Additionally, he loved spending time with his husband at their cabin on Henderson Lake, fishing, and golfing.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved husband of 20 years: Keith Rutherford; his two children: Nicholas Rau (Shannon), Kim Hatch (Brian); his grandchildren: Christiana Hatch, Ashelyn Hatch, Rowan Hatch, Seth Ferrier, Austin Ferrier, Cole Ferrier, and Marcus Ferrier; his brother: William Rau (Connie); as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents: Norman and Vivian Rau.
The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the ICU medical staff and doctors at Hurley Medical Center.
